Did you know that 1 in 4 of the population is affected by dental fear or phobia? – In today’s society teeth play an important part in people’s physical appearance. Neglected and uncared for teeth can lead to problems with confidence and self-esteem. Don’t let your fear stop you from getting a healthy, bright smile.

Here at Smile NW dental practice we understand that for many people, a trip to the dentist can be a nerve wracking prospect. Most people get terrified just from the simple thought of having dental treatment; our team are highly trained in handling nervous patients.

Sedation:

We offer sedation to nervous patients to help make their experience of dental treatment more relaxed and comfortable. We have a qualified medical doctor and anaesthetist to provide intravenous sedation for nervous patients.

Dr Sonia George will carry out the sedation. She gained her anaesthetic experience in renowned London hospitals: Westminster Hospital, West Middlesex University hospital, Royal Marsden, Brook General Hospital and King Edward VII Hospital.

The drug used for sedation promotes the feeling of calmness to the patient, it provides a powerful amnesia so that the patient remembers very little of the procedure.

Hypnotherapy:

Another option is hypnotherapy. At Smile NW dental practice we also have a hypnotherapist who can help put nervous patients at ease. Anxiety is one of the biggest issues in dentistry and being able to deal with this makes for a more pleasant treatment and experience for both dentist and patient. Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation. It cannot be carried out against someone’s will, they will have to co-operate.

Our hypnotherapist Sharon Waxkirsh believes that by calming both the body and mind, hypnosis will decrease the worries in your conscious mind and help you focus on positive imagery and help desensitize you to any discomfort during your dental treatment.

Sharon Waxkirsh co-founded the Institute of Hypnotherapy for Medical and Dental Practice, where they teach Surgeons, Anaesthetics, and Dental Professionals.
